For over two decades, I dedicated my life to caring for others as a bedside nurse. Driven by compassion and a desire to make a difference, I tirelessly worked long hours and faced the emotional challenges of the healthcare industry. However, the constant stress and demanding nature of the job took a toll on my own well-being, leaving me feeling physically and mentally drained.

After years of dedicated service in the healthcare industry, I experienced firsthand the physical and emotional toll of burnout. Through self-care, personal growth, and professional training, I transformed my life and now I help others do the same. 

The Tipping Point: How Burnout Affected My Health

Struggling with Physical and Emotional Exhaustion

During a particularly demanding shift, I reached my breaking point. The overwhelming workload and emotional stress took a toll on my physical health, leading to chest pain, shortness of breath, and a sense of impending doom. These symptoms brought me to the emergency department as a patient. This alarming experience, coupled with a new diagnosis of a thyroid condition exacerbated by stress, served as a wake-up call. I realized that I needed to prioritize my own well-being and make significant changes in my life.

The Cycle of Burnout and Neglecting Self-Care

Driven by a newfound determination, I embarked on a journey to reclaim my health from my work stress. I swapped takeout meals for home-cooked dinners, welcomed a furry companion to inspire daily walks, and joined a local gym. I also sought medical attention, started medication for high blood pressure and scheduling regular check-ups. To reduce stress, I quit my second job and spent evenings relaxing on the couch, watching TV. At the time, I was only in my 20s and was hopeful that my body could heal and rejuvenate itself. Until...

The Impact of Grief and Guilt

For a while, I was able to navigate the demanding world of nursing, fueled by a deep sense of my purpose and compassion. I prided myself on my ability to manage the physical and emotional challenges of the job with my new strategies. However, my world was irrevocably altered once again when my father passed away. The inability to be by his side during his final moments, a consequence of hospital protocols, ignited a wave of grief, anger, and guilt. This profound loss, coupled with increasing frustration at work and a growing disconnect with the healthcare system, pushed me to the brink of burnout once more.

My Path to Healing: Finding Balance and Purpose

 Discovering Integrative Medicine and Holistic Health 

I started looking at healing for myself and my patients from a whole different angle and as a result embarked on a life changing odyssey. Seeking a more fulfilling and sustainable path, I embarked on a transformative journey of self-discovery. I studied Integrative Medicine with Dr. Andrew Weil, became a Nationally Board Certified Health and Wellness coach, a certified Compassion Fatigue Professional, a Certified Yoga teacher, a Level 2 Restorative Yoga Instructor and a Resilience Coach for Stress and Burnout. Through my training and personal experience, I gained valuable insights into stress management, resilience building, and holistic well-being.

Advocacy and Leadership in Mental Health

As I embarked on my journey to get to the root of stress and burnout, I became a Mental Health Fellow for the American Nurses' Association of California. Through peer support and advocacy, I organized webinars to raise awareness about the dangers of burnout and the importance of building resilience. Working as a phone counselor for the Alameda Crisis Support Line further deepened my understanding first hand with callers about the profound impact of stress and crisis on individuals. These experiences ignited a passion within me to help others overcome burnout and reclaim their well-being.
